Every elephant is faithful, for sure.
No stuffed animal, no cartoon, no advertisement, no documentary, no knowledge about animals living in Africa – none of them has prepared us adequately for real life.
Seeing an elephant for the first time when pacing through the morning savannah and, according to Bill Murray, “you will never forget an elephant”.
Hearing a lion’s roar at dusk and seeing the same super beast lying on his back on a big rock, fluffy belly in front of the warming sun the next day.
A pack of warthog hurried over a forest slurry, the tails vigilantly upward… Hippos galloping in the jungle river… Mr Murray wrote: Elephants hover over golden planes like gigantic, long-sleeved flowers moving slowly. Indeed, nature’s great masterpiece.
It has something life-enlightening, joy in getting too close to them, and all African cult animals, like a fantastic but blurred dream, are suddenly brought to life in a narrow, hypnotizing, hyper-technicolour focus.
We aren’t ever going to have a look at a stuffed animal, film clip, advertisement, artistic and inevitably one-sided images in the same way anymore.
